UK Conservative Party leader Kemi Badenoch has revealed that she no longer identifies as Nigerian and has not held a Nigerian passport for more than 20 years.
Born in London in 1980, Badenoch spent much of her childhood in Nigeria before returning to the UK at the age of 16. She belongs to the last group of people who received UK birthright citizenship before it was abolished by Margaret Thatcher’s government in 1981.
Speaking recently on a podcast, Badenoch reflected on her early years in Nigeria, admitting she often felt a sense of disconnection and never fully felt she belonged. Now firmly rooted in the UK, she describes “home” as being where her current family is — her husband, children, brother, and in-laws.
“Home is where my family is now,” she explained, underscoring her deep connection to her life in Britain.
