Veteran entertainer and activist Charles Oputa, popularly known as Charly Boy, has brushed off the recent decision to rename a bus stop in Lagos State that was previously associated with his name.
During an appearance on Channels Television’s Morning Briefing on Tuesday, Charly Boy made it clear that the change leaves him unfazed. The bus stop, once popularly called “Charly Boy Bus Stop” by local residents in recognition of his contributions to civic activism, has now been renamed “Badoo Bus Stop” by the outgoing Chairman of Bariga Local Council Development Area, Kolade Alabi.
“It doesn’t matter to me. Anyone who has done something meaningful for their community can take the shine. I’m indifferent. That’s not our priority right now,” he said.
Instead of dwelling on symbolic gestures, Charly Boy urged Nigerians to channel their energy towards more pressing national concerns—especially the push for electoral reforms and credible elections.
“There are bigger things we should be concerned about—like making sure that come 2024, our votes count. That’s where our focus should be,” he added.
While some residents and online commentators have questioned the motives behind the renaming, others see it as part of the ever-changing nature of community recognition. But for Charly Boy, legacy is not about names on signboards—it’s about lasting impact.
