The Ondo governorship election is set for Saturday, with the incumbent, Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, among the candidates.
President Bola Tinubu has called for a peaceful conduct of the election in Ondo State, commending the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for its preparedness. In a Friday statement, presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga said, “As Ondo State gears up for its off-cycle governorship election, President Tinubu urges all political stakeholders and voters to maintain peace and carry out their civic duties calmly before and after the election.”
President Tinubu expressed hope for a democratic process that genuinely reflects the people’s choice. He praised INEC’s readiness for the poll, as well as the efforts of the security personnel to ensure a safe voting environment.
“He also appreciates the deployment of security forces and the assurances given by the Inspector-General of Police and the Chief of Defence Staff regarding professional conduct in line with the Electoral Act to safeguard a credible election process,” the statement continued.
The President reminded all political players, especially the candidates, that the mandate to govern comes from the people and must be respected. He highlighted the importance of a free and fair election for strengthening Nigeria’s 25-year democratic journey.
Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa of the APC faces key opponents Agboola Ajayi of the PDP and Abbas Mimiko of the ZLP, among others, in the upcoming election. Ondo State, governed by the APC, consists of 18 local government areas. On Friday, INEC distributed electoral materials across the state.
Earlier, the candidates signed a peace agreement ahead of the election.
